I don't even watch F1, but isn't one of the points of the race to be smarter than everyone else and create innovations that will push you over the edge compared to the competition? I can imagine the engineer team to be as important as the driver. You just don't see it directly.

There is also a budget cap implemented for the last couple of years, so everyone will eventually be fighting with the same guns.

The engines although manufactured by different companies are all identical in horsepower output already. Redbull has a rocketship because the chassis is more aerodynamic. If you want all the cars to be identical, There's F2, F3, F4 etc

I'm pretty sure that there are rules and regulations that make the engines more or less the same.

F1 Isn't about throwing money to see who can go faster. If you followed the sport you'd know this via cost caps and reduced wind tunnel time etc. It's about ingenuity and interpretation of the rulebook.

Its the pinnacle of open wheel racing. Making parts of the cars identical severely limits innovation and variety (variety is already incredibly limited) Teams can make engines fit differently in the car. Different aero strategies require different engine placements and the entire engine can be altered to fit exactly in the car. Its a complete package, not just some engine thrown in the car.

F1 isn't about the drivers or entertainment. It's the pinnacle of Motorsport, the best car engineering competition in the world, the car must be the protagonist. Equal engines are for lower categories. Also, the PU isn't as impactant to their results as aero and suspensions are. F1 is a complete package, it's not the 70s anymore where you could buy parts and assemble a random chassis and throw in a Ford DFV and race with it.
